LANDSCAPE PLANS for Yaupon Place

Illustration of the current land at Yaupon Place prior to playground, new entrance trails and picnic tables being added in 2022.

The land at Yaupon Place currently offers

  • community gathering spaces at several picnic tables and benches

  • a half-mile walking path and exercise equipment under a canopy of trees

  • a labyrinth for meditation at the center of the park

  • and traditional playground

Yaupon Place proposes to include in its future plans: “natural playgroud” elements for children and families, an herb and sensory garden surrounding the labyrinth, a new generation of trees, and increased mid-and-understory landscaping to address the variety of environmental needs and experiences at the park (bushes, long grasses, pollinators, rain gardens, etc.)

The canopy of trees creates shaded gathering space at the park. A new generation of trees will be planted in the fall of 2023 to preserve this well-loved feature for future generations.

The labyrinth located at the center of Yaupon Place. An herb and sensory garden will encircle it. Progress to complete this garden was begun in 2022 with the generosity of Keep Virginia Beautiful’s Green Grant, but more funding is needed to complete the project as the soil here has been packed down and was once used as a dumping ground for hazardous debris.

Natural play elements will be built with wood, rocks, and other natural materials among the shaded trees for children and families to enjoy, inspiring creativity and a love of nature for all.

Landscaping will be added to address the marshy areas and rain runoff, need for pollinators, and general increasing the park’s biodiversity.

A playground and exercise equipment has been purchased and will be installed late 2022/early 2023. The new exercise equipment will be placed along the walking trail just as the community enjoyed in the past.
